Q: Sometimes I see 'Dancing Star' mentioned. What is that?

A: Dancing Star LLC is the name of the company (and also the farm that we live on). Chunks of Energy is the name of the product. Since we only have one product, we sometimes refer to the company as Chunks of Energy, since that is why people know us. Dancing Star just launched a new product, called Rave Bites (TM). They are the same basic recipe as Chunks of Energy, but smaller, Certified Gluten-Free, and in 7 ounce packages. If you’re interested, feel free to contact us, or check out the Rave Bites website or on social media ( @ravebites).

Q: Why is the company called Dancing Star?

A: Because of this quote…

You need chaos in the soul to give birth to a dancing star.

-Nietzsche (in ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’)

Q: Why is the product called Chunks of Energy?

A: The name emerged around the dinner table, in the early 90’s, during a family brainstorming session. Leah, 8 at the time, shouted out ‘Chunks of Energy!’ because it seemed to her to represent–simply–what her dad had created. It still does.

Q: Why don't I ever see ads for your product?

A: In twenty two years, we haven’t raised our prices, because we focus on product development and ingredient sourcing, and let Chunks of Energy speak for themselves via word of mouth. Because of this model, we have come to appreciate our customers even more, and their recommendation of the product to friends and neighbors (in your town, or the bulk aisle).

Q: I have seen different names for these products. Have you changed them?

A: Yes. We had a temporary name change of some of the flavors, but we are back to the originals names:

Q: Do you have products that are suitable for people who are gluten-sensitive, gluten-intolerant, or gluten-wary?

A: Yes, we have products that are suitable for people who are gluten-sensitive, gluten-intolerant, or gluten-wary.

  • Certified Gluten-Free options Certified Gluten Free (by the Gluten Free Certification Organization. The GFCO seal means that the product contains less than 10ppm gluten (5ppm gliadin). This is stricter than federal standards of Gluten-Free, and is the strictest certification available, as no testing method exists that measures to zero.
    1. Rave Bites TM (A sister brand to Chunks of Energy). They are the same basic recipe as Chunks of Energy, but smaller, Certified Gluten-Free, and in 7 ounce packages.
    2. Certified Gluten-Free Chunks of Energy in bulk
  • Other Options (not Certified Gluten-Free) For those who can handle the potential of trace amounts, you’ll see that none of our Chunks of Energy contain gluten as an ingredient.
    1. Chunks of Energy in Bulk

Q: Are Chunks of Energy raw?

A: The flavors labeled with the “R” icon contain ingredients that are never heated above 110 degrees F. In other Chunks of Energy, about 80% of the ingredients are not heated about 110 degrees F. None of the nuts or seeds we use are cooked.

Q: What are 'natural flavors'?

A: We can’t give away all of our secrets! Here is a note from our supplier of natural flavors:

None of the flavors that we sell to Chunks of Energy contain any major food allergens.
We do not use any MSG.  We specialize in the manufacture of what are typically called sweet and nut flavors (fruit, berry, nut, mint, alcoholic-beverage, coffee, herb, spice, vanilla, etc.), while MSG is usually used to enhance savory flavors (chicken, beef, pork, etc).
Regarding the question on organic-certified flavors, we make some organic-certified flavors, but not nearly as many as we do all-natural flavors.  The primary reason is that most of the flavor components we use are not available in organic-certified varieties.  For example, we use about 650 ingredients, but less than 50 are available organic-certified.  This means that for many products we and other flavor suppliers are often not able to get the same high quality flavor profile in an organic-certified product.  As a result, many manufacturers, such as Chunks of Energy, may choose to use an all-natural, organic-compliant flavor instead of an organic-certified flavor to provide their product with the best flavor profile available.  Better a great-tasting consumer product with 0.3-1.0% of an all-natural, organic-compliant flavor, than a fair- or bad-tasting consumer product with a less-than-optimum organic-certified flavor.

Also, we are aware that many natural flavors contain GMOs. Crops which are generally recognized to carry a risk of being genetically engineered include alfalfa, canola, corn, cotton, papaya, soy, sugar beets, zucchini and yellow summer squash.Chunks of Energy do not contain ingredients derived from any of these crops.Animal derivatives are also generally recognized to carry a GMO risk because soy, corn, cottonseed, canola and vitamins are commonly used in feed. With the exception of honey, Chunks of Energy do not contain any animal derivatives or ingredients derived from animal derivatives.

Q: Can you tell me more about the organic extracts?

A: Sure! Here is a note from our organic extract supplier:

We do not put sugar in any of the organic-certified extracts you purchase.  However, for the alcohol we use in these products we sell to you, organic cane sugar is fermented into alcohol, and the alcohol is then used in the Organic Vanilla, Organic Lemon and Organic Orange Extracts you purchase.  Because all of the sugar used to make the alcohol is fermented and none remains as sugar, you can very comfortably tell your customer that there is no sugar in any of these extracts.

Q: What is the best way to store Chunks of Energy to maximize freshness?

A: Chunks of Energy will be freshest and will last the longest if you store them in a tightly sealed container or bag. It is ok to store them at room temperature, but we recommend refrigerating or freezing them. It will greatly extend the quality of flavor and texture. If you can resist eating them all, they will be good at least a month if refrigerated, and at least 3 months frozen.  The raw flavors, which are date-based, are most sensitive to heat and dryness. (If you freeze them, make sure you thaw them before taking a bite!) Please note that some people prefer them ‘aged.’

Q: Do Chunks of Energy have an expiration date?

A: We recommend that you eat refrigerated Chunks of Energy within 2 months, and non-refrigerated Chunks of Energy within 2 or 3 weeks. The raw ones will start to get dry earlier than the non-raw ones, because they are date-based.

Q: Can you tell me where I can find a store near me?

A: Yes! We have a store finder form. Just fill it out and we will email you.

Q: How long will it take for my order to be shipped?

A: Orders are shipped out on Fridays and take about a week to arrive. If you need Chunks of Energy before a certain date, please contact us to get a better estimate, based on your location. By the way, www.nuts.com ships Energy Squares very quickly!

Q: Can I get product outside of the United States?

A: Our friends at Nuts Online will ship to APO/FPO addresses, Canada, Guam, Saint Croix, Saint John, Saint Thomas, Puerto Rico, Saipan and the Virgin Islands.

Q: Are my purchases secure?

A: Yes. Your transactions are processed using a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol, which encrypts your personal information, protecting you from fraud and theft.

Q: What about my privacy?

A: We will never use your information in a way that threatens the trust between us. If you decide to share on this website, we will not disclose anything to third-parties, ever, and we won’t send you unsolicited mail either. Any an all information you share with us will remain confidential, unless we get your permission to share it.

Q: I work at a store that wants to carry your product. Can you help?

A: Gladly! We have a dedicated wholesale page.  Or, you can always contact us.
